ENTRANCE GATEWAYS—WOOD AND IRON GATES

43

Inigo Jones’s Gateway at Chiswick House,
Middlesex. It is to be hoped that this fine gateway
will be kept clear from an overgrowth of ivy, such
as has completely smothered the beautiful bridge in
the grounds.

A charming hand gate in the garden at Tyninghame,
Haddingtonshire. The circular-headed gate chiessy
of open bars, but with a richly decorated lock-rail,
opens within an iron arch filled with scrollwork,
between two beautifully designed pilasters.

Gate from the Wilderness, Belton House, Grantham, by Thomas Robinson. The fine sense of
design of the whole, the way the top rail of the paling swings up to a shoulder, bearing a graceful
buttress bracket that leads to the rich pyramidal overthrow, is all delightfully satisfying.
