GARDEN ORNAMENT

ORANGERIES
THE orangery became a necessary adjunct to the great house when the fashion
was adopted from France and Italy of having orange and othfer tender
trees in tubs for the summer ornament of the great terrace. Orangeries
such as were built at Bowood, Longleat and Belton were structures os
considerable magnificence. Columns supporting a whole entablature, surmounted
by a decorated pediment would adorn the entrance, and there would be a central domed
pavilion or some such building at either end. The roof was veiled by a handsome
balustrade, whose piers, corresponding with the pilasters below, carried urns or statuary.
In the case of those built under the influence of Wren, such as the one at Belton,
where the very large glazed panels divided by a slender pier or pilaster might give a
sense of weakness, this was corrected by the end panels being made much narrower,
with a solid parapet above in place of the open balustrade. At Wrest, the fine
orangery has had the usual low-pitched roof of slate replaced with glass.
