{20 r) appears four times among the examined manusoripts 88. A very common repre-
sentation, appearing yet in the Tours Psalter from 804, is a bird with a fish in his beak,
paranatellonta of Aquarius {21 r) *». The figure presented from behind sitting on a boar,
paranatellonta of Sagittarius {21 r), is repeated on the pages of many psalters and several
times in the Latin-French Hours (Stowe 17)30. In five of the examined manuscripts
there appears a figure with the flute or horn in its hand, paranatellonta of Gemini
{23 r) 31. A man with the head of a donkey called, after Albumasar, Vir Ethiopes,
paranatellonta of Aquarius {28 v), appears in the book of hours mentioned above and
in the Bohun Psalter 32. A figure with the head of a bird of prey, paranatellonta of Libra,
Aries and Pisces {31 r) is presented in the Psalter de Lisle33. To the ones appearing
many times there also belongs the constellation of Carter (Auriga, paranatellonta of
Leo, 32 v) with a scourge in his hand.34. Particularly common is a representation of
a monkey, paranatellonta of Capricorn {36 r) 35. Several times there appears a man
carrying a burden, paranatellonta of the decanates of the following signs: Capricorn,
Pisces, Gemini or Scorpio {36 r)36. The image of a man with a ring, paranatellonta of
Aries and Sagittarius {36 v) can be found in the Bohun Psalter 37. The images of a mermaid
with two tails are also frequent {36 v); this is either a woman with the legs of a serpent
(paranatellonta of Capricorn) or Nereid called also Water Maid (paranatellonta of
Scorpio)38. Copied nearly accurately from the illustrated treatise by Albumasar, the
image of Sagittarius mounting the boar {37 v, fig. 76, paranatellonta of Aquarius) is
repeated only two times in the Gorleston Psalter and the Taymouth Hours and only
as a figure with a bow on a horse 39. Winged figure with an opened book (paranatellonta
of Virgo, 37 v, fig. 76) appears in St. Omer Hours40. Constellations of the Northern
and Southern Crown (Corona Borealis and Meridionalis), paranatellonta of Gemini,
Cancer, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius and Capricorn {40 r) decorate St. Omer Hours and the
Luttrell Psalter, being accompanied — as in the Florian Psalter —■ by a bird with a long
beak 41. The image of the Eridan constellation (Eridanus, 41 r), paranatellonta of Aries,
Taurus, Gemini, Sagittarius and Aquarius is repeated as the bearded head with
moustache42. Very frequent are also the images of Hercules constellations {41 r)
paranatellonta of Gemini, Cancer and Pisces and Dragon (paranatellonta of Gemini
and Leo, 41 r, 53 v, 57 r, 60 v, fig. 77, 78) 43. The zodiac sign of Aquarius, paranatellonta
of Leo, Aquarius and Pisces {41r, fig. 77) appears only in the Gorleston Psalter and Latin -
-French Hours (Stowe 17)44. In many books of hours and psalters there appear figures-
