EMOTIONS AND PASSIONS. Ch. II.

that hate , the mind, wonderfully bent on an ob-
jeft, negle&s no opportunity to vent itsels: any
adt of kindness or good-will that would pass un-
regarded upon another occasion, is greedily seized ;
and the vague feeling is converted into a real pas-
sxon of gratitude : in such a hate , favors are re-
turned double.

In like manner , a courageous adtion produceth
in a speclator the passion of admiration diredled to
the author : andbeside this well-known passion, a
separate seeling is railed in the spedtator ; which
may be called an emotion of courage ; because ,
while under its inssuence , he is conscious of a
boldness and intrepidity beyond what is usual, and
longs for proper objeds upon which to exert this
emotion :

Spumatitemque dari pecora inter inertia votis
Optat aprum , aut sulvum descendere monte leoneni.
jEnsid. iv. 15S.

Non altramente il tauro , ove Tirriti
Geloso amor con ssimoli pungenti,
Orribilmente mugge, e co’ muggiti
Gli spirti in se risveglia , sire ardenti :
E’l corno aguzza ai tronchi , e par ch’ inviti
Con vani colpi alia battaglia i venti.
Tajfo canto 7. f. 55.

So full of valour that they sniote the air
For breathing in their faces.
