26 FIGURES. Ch. XX.
O thou ! of bus’ness the directing soul !
To this our head, like bias to the bowl.
Which , as more pond’rous , made its aim more true ,
Obliquely waddling to the mask in view :
O ! ever gracious to perplex’d mankind.
Still spread a healingmilt before the mind’.
And , led we err by Wit’s wild dancing light,
Secure us kindly in our native night.
Or, if to wit a coxcomb make pretence ,
Guard the sare barrier between that and sense ;
Or quite unravel ail the reas’ning thread ,
And hang some curious cobweb in its dead !
As, forc’d srom wind-guns, lead itself can ssy,
And pond rous dugs cut swiftly through the Iky ;
As clocks to weight their nimble motion owe.
The wheels above urg’d by the load below:
Ale Emptiness and Dullness could inspire ,
And were my elasticity, and fire.
B. i. i63.
The following instance is stretched beyond all re-
semblance : it is bold to take a part or member o£
a living creature , and to bellow upon it life, voli-
tion , and ailion : after animating two such mem-
bers, it is still bolder to make one envy the other ;
for this is wide of any resemblance to reality :
