The Royal Nymphenburg Porcelain Factory,

Its Tradifional and Modern Phases bv waiterA.de sag

The appeal which the Rococo period makestotheimagination
is far more vivid for us to-day than it was during the Victorian
era.Time has lent the charm ofcontrastto the retrospective Vi-
sion and we now look back from the restless activityof our
own period, with its ever-increasing absorption in material
existence, to the calm serenity and the artistic splendour of
Rococo days with a feeling of genuine and tender affection.
We are able to visualise and to appraise far more justly
than our fathers could the life of those spacious times, a life
beautified by the colour and richness of its environment. Art—
in all its varied forms, was the predominating feature of this
epoch, when Goethe sang the songs of his youth, when
Mozart and Bach charmed princes and people with their
immortal compositions, and Balthasar Neumann gave to the
world the stately splendour of his Rococo architecture. We
cannot call to mind the eighteenth Century without thinking
of the violin and the flute, the spacious halls of the Rococo
palaces of princes and nobles, with their graceful furniture,

and their dainty silk fabrics gleaming in the thousand lights
of the superbly wrought candelabra. But, one other form of
art still remains which, perhaps more than any other, strikes
the key-note of this rare epoch, the art of shaping porcelain
into forms of permanent loveliness.

The discovery of porcelain (as far as Europe is concerned, for
the Chinese had been familiarwith itfor centuries) occurred at
the very beginning of the Rococo period, and this was the
material best fitted to express the daintiness, the gaiety and the
sunny brilliance which distinguished the age from all others.
AfterFriedrichAugustBoettgerdiscovered the porcelain process
inl 71 Oat Meissen where the first porcelain factory wasfounded,
every prince and monarch feit the desire to set up similar fac-
tories within their own dominions; and, in 1747, the Royal
Nymphenburg Porcelain Factory was established as an im-
posing attribute to the glory of the brilliant Electoral Court of
the ancient House of Wittelsbach. Thanks to the self-sacri-
