4 “The altar screen (0.8-0.85 tn) is based on a broad limestone podium (1.4 m) extending
for 0.55 m to the west. The remains of this altar screen can be seen over the podium until the
present. The surface of the altar screen establishes the same plane with the surfaces of the
western sides of the eastern pillars. Before the northeastern pillar there are several stones
stuck by lime-mortar, which might be the remains of architectural decoration of an attar
screen section. The traces of three entrances to the altar are very vague. The most definite is
the central entrance, “The Tsar’s Doors’’, which is about 1 m in width. The entrance to the
prothesis, 0,8 m in width, was, probably, set nearby the northeastern pillar. The entrance to
the diakonnik should be built symmetrical to the latter”. Voronin N. N. Zodchestvo Severo-
Vostochnoi Rusi XII-XV vv. M.; L. 1962. S. 379. Compare II. 183, 186.

II. 125. 127 .
8 We should note that О. M. loannisian gives another interpretation of this structure. He
considers it as the remains of the wall of a very small chamber inside the prothesis. I am tak-
ing the opportunity to express my gratitude to Oleg loannisian for the possibility to get
acquainted with his dispoveries during his excavations in Rostov Velikii in 1991-1995.
