100 TRAVELS IN EGYPT, NUBIA,

subject; because it seemed to me, that the higher I advanced
up the Nile, the signs of the ancient progress of Christianity
southward on its banks, became apparent in the Greek in-
scriptions and other remains of antiquity, of which I had
observed nothing below Philae.

I remarked that no buffalo, though very common north
of Assuan, was to be seen between Philae and Ibrim. Cro-
codiles were common here, but no hippopotamus appeared;
but the natives spoke of it as seen during the time of inun-
dation in the shellaals, particularly at Galabshee, calling it
Farsh el bahr (the sea-horse). My voyage was made when
the Nile was nearly at its lowest state, which circumstance
must be attended to in the consideration of my descriptions.
