The Museum, opened in 1961, is of a biographical character
and is devoted to the works oi Boland's greatest Renaissance
poet, Jan Kochanowski (1530—84) against the background of
the epoch. It is lodged in the 19th-century country house
of the Jablonowski iamily, which was 'built on the site
oi the iormer Kochanowski house.

RURAL MEMORIAL ROOM in an old peasant hut. Material
culture, weaving, costumes, paper cut-outs, interior decora-
tion from the 19th/20th centuries.

GROUND OF THE LUSATIAN CULTURE, with the exhibi-
tion: Lusatian Culture in Poland — Cz^stochowa-Rakow,
Pokoju Avenue, tel. 319-51. Open daily except Mondays and
days iollowing holidays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Wednesdays
from 1 to 6 p.m.
The Museum was established in 1905 under the name of Museum
oi Hygiene and was at iirst lodged in a iew rooms; in 1909 it w.as
moved to a Viennese Secession-style paviiion in the Staszic Park,
which had been erected i'or the industrial and agricultural exhibition
organized that year by the Warsaw Hygienic Society. In 1923, it was
taken over by the town of Czgstochowa and acquired the character
of an ethnographic museum. In 1929, it was given the name of
Municipal Ethnographic and Hygienic Museum. At that time the
gathering of naturai history and ethnographic collections and the
organizing of art exhibitions were started. In the years 1932—39,
the Museum was administered by the Society for the Promotion
of Regional Cuiture. In the period of Nazi occupation the collections
of the Museum were destroyed. After the war, the collecting was
started anew. In 1965, the Museum acquired the historic Town Hall
buiiding from 1828, and the planned gathering of collections for
the various departments was started, based upon research in the
region of Czgstochowa.
The Museum now has the following departments.
Natural History — including a collection of insect
fossiis oi the geological and palaeontological caves, which
