The Museum collects relics oi iolk material culture, archival
material pertaining to the past oi the town and old books.

REGIONAL ROOM in the building oi the Farmers' Club at
the Cracow-Zakopane highway. Open daily, except Tues-
days, aiter 4 p.m.
PELPLIN (Gdansk Voivodship, Tczew County)
DIOCESAN MUSEUM, established in 1928 by Stanislaw Oku-
niewski, bishop of Chelmno, in the episcopal palace, the
bishop's chancellery and in the building of the Clerical Se-
minary, had a valuable collection of mediaeval painting and
sculpture from the whole territory of Pomerania. Some of
the more valuable specimens were displayed at the exhibition
"Polish Gothic Art" in Warsaw in 1935. During the last war,
the Museum suffered heavy losses. What has remained of
the collection does not have for the time being the character
of a museum.

The castle at Fieskowa Ska!a, tirst mentioned in 1315, was erected
in brick by Casimir the Great, and considerably extended in the
15th century. Further extended and transformed into a stately mo-
dern residence in the time oi Renaissance, it was strengthened with
bastion iortifications beiore the middle of the 17th century. Sold
by auction at the end of the 19th century, it was afterwards used
as a boarding house. After World War II, the castle was thoroughly
renovated and partly reconstructed with State funds. Particularly
Interesting parts Include: the arcade and pillar courtyard from
c. 1580 with late-Renaissance masks; the two-tier loggia irom the
last quarter of the 16th century; the chapel from the middle oi the
17th century; the Gothic defensive tower; the curtain wall with the
entry gate and two bastions from the middle of the 17th century.
The first-iloor and second-floor interiors and part oi the ground-
floor interiors are used ior exhibition ipurposes.
The Library with about 20,000 volumes (including valuable old books)
was until 1939 in the castle in Krasiczyn, owned by the Sapieha
family.
