THE MARCIN KASPRZAK MUSEUM OF HISTORY OF
THE WORKING-CLASS MOVEMENT, 3 Old Market Square
(the Guardhouse), tel. 594-92 and 594-64 (the Educational
Section). Open daily, except Mondays and days following
holidays, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sundays and holidays from
10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Non-exhibited collections are accessible only for research
and publication purposes (this applies mainly to archival
material, printed matter, iconographic material, etc.).
The Library of the Museum (numbering about 3,500 volumes)
collects specialized literature dealing with the history of the
working-class movement. It is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The Museum, established under a 1962 resolution oi' the Praesidium
of the Municipal National Council in Poznan, adopted the name
oi Marcin Kasprzak, revoiutionary leader oi Great Poland and the
former Kingdom of Poiand, member oi the SDKPiL (Social-De-
mocratic Party of the Kingdom of Poland and Lithuania).
The Museum is lodged in the "Guardhouse", a Neo-classical build-
ing erected in the years 1785—87 (architect: Jan Chrystian Kamse-
tzer), through the efforts of the Good Order Commission, upon the
initiative of the Commission's Chairman, K. Raczyhski. The buiid-
ing was destroyed by fire during the battle for Poznan in 1915.
It was rebuiit in 1950.
The Museum collects miscellaneous material relating to the
history of the working-class movement, especially connected
with the region of Great Poland, such as source docurnents,
printed matter, memorials of leaders, sculptures, graphic
art, paintings, posters, etc. The largest, though still incom-
plete, groups of exhibits in the Museum's possession are
those concerning Marcin Kasprzak and the early period of
People's Poland.
The collections of the Museum are divided into chronological
periods: the period up to 1918, the period between the two
world wars, the period of occupation, and the period of
People's Poland. Within the various sections, exhibits are
assembled in groups, e.g., materials and exhibits related to
M. Kasprzak, to the Zioiqzek WaiTci Mio<%ch (The Union of
Struggle of the Young), etc.
Among these groups of exhibits, the richest is the collection
of documents and photographs. The Museum has also started
building up a collection of sculptures, medals and plaques
of leaders of the revolutionary movement in the region of
Poznan. The most valuable sculptures acquired so far repre-
sent: L. Waryhski, Rosa Luxemburg, M. Kasprzak, J. Mar-
chlewski, S. Chudoba, A. Bruno-Bem, J. Krasicki and H. Sa-
wicka.
MUSEUM OF THE LIBERATION at the Citadel, a branch
of the Marcin Kasprzak Museum, open daily from 11 a.m.
to 4 p.m. in summer, from 12 noon to 4 p.m. in winter.
Tel. 576-39. The exhibition presents the history of growth of
the Prussian fortress Poznan, with special emphasis on the
history of the Citadel. The struggle for the liberation of
Great Poland and Poznan in World War II. Heavy arms from
World War II.
THE MUSEUM OF MARTYRDOM, Polska Street, is lodged
in the Seventh Fort of the Poznan Citadel and depicts the
martyrdom of the population during World War II; during
the occupation the Nazis set up a transit camp and interro-
gation centre here, through which about 40,060 persons
