The Museum of the Earth is a multi-sectional museum de-
voted to the geological sciences (the science of the Earth).
It comprises the foliowing sections:
mineralogy and petrography; ambers; palaeobotany; palaeo-
zoology; geology and relics of inanimate nature; history
of the geological sciences (with an archive); popularization
of the geological sciences; library and reading-room; scien-
tific and technical section with a photographic workshop.
The Library of the Museum of the Earth ranks among the
biggest specialist llbraries in the country.
MUSEUM OF THE FREDURIC CHOPIN SOCIETY, 1 Okol-
nik Street (the Ostrogski Palace), tel. 27-54-71, ext. 92. Open
daily, except Sundays and holidays, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Non-exhibited collections are accessible from 11 a.m. to
2 p.m. The Frederic Chopin Society (formerly the Frederic
Chopin Institute), founded in 1934, did not at first have
museum collections. The Museum was established in 1953
when the Institute moved to the reconstructed Ostrogski
palace. The first exhibition "Autographs and Portraits of
Frederic Chopin" was opened in 1955. The collections are
divided into the following sections:
The Works of Chopin — autographs, semi-auto-
graphs, copies from the 19th and 20th centuries, first edi-
tions with hand-made corrections; Chopin's autographs in-
clude: Trio in G minor, Op. 8, eight Etudes from Op. 10,
Impromptus in A flat Major, Op. 29, a rough copy of the Sona-
ta in G Minor, Op. 65 and Polonaise in F Minor, Op. 71 No. 3;
Works by Various Composers — autographs,
copies, printed music; these include the autograph of W. A.
Mozart's Piano Quartet in G Minor, KV/478, and J. Elsner's
four Morning Songs;
Chopin Letters — written by him, to him and about him;
miscellaneous letters;
Chopin's Autographs — dedications, the Kttryer Szajwskt,
greeting cards, signatures, drawings; miscellaneous auto-
graphs, including some by members of Chopin's family;
Portraits of Chopin and of his family;
Medals and plaques of Chopin and his contemporaries;
Chopin Mementoes — including a Pleyel piano;
Programmes of concerts, views of places visited by Chopin;
miscellaneous printed matter — invitations, visiting cards,
obituary notices, photographs, children's drawings on themes
relating to Chopin.
The collection comprises a total of over 1,000 items which
are displayed at the Society's premises, in the former Chopin
drawing room at 5 Krakowskie Przedmiescie in Warsaw,
and at the Museum's Branch at Zelazowa Wola.
