took over a neolithic grave discovered at Poniatdwka near Wojsla-
wice. During Worid War II, the Nazis took the archaeoiogical and
ethnographic collections to Germany, and translerred the historicai
documents, books and manuscripts to the archives in Lublin and
Cheim; the coliections of the Uniate section were also removed.
After the liberation of Cheim in 1944, the organization of the mu-
seum was started anew but not more than 10 per cent of the old
collection was recovered at that time. In 1963, the Museum acquired
new premises in the iormer Piarist College from the 18th century.
The Museum is of a regional character. Its activity covers the
county of Cheim and the adjacent parts of the counties of Hru-
bieszow in the south and oi Wiodawa in the north.
The museum has the following sections:
Archaeoiogy — with a rather small collection of relics
of the Stone Age;
History — with a collection chiefly from the 18th and
19th centuries, including documents, manuscripts, old books,
military and numismatic items;
Ethnography — a large and diversified collection, in-
cluding farming, fishing and weaving implements and uten-
sils, articles of straw and wicker, metal objects — among
them 40 wrought-iron wayside crucifixes, textiles, costumes,
ceramics, a collection of some 100 tobacco pipes, etc,;
A r t — a collection of portraits, clocks, silverware, china,
etc. This section keeps the remnants of the Old Uniate col-
lection, specimens of folk art including about 30 wayside
holy figures, as well as Hebraica and a collection of prints.
War, Occupation and Liberation — covering
the period from September 1st, 1939 to July 22nd, 1944;
among other things, this section has a complete set of ali
announcements issued by the occupation authorities;
Natural History — comprising geology and mineralogy,
the flora, fauna and countryside of the whole Lublin voi-
vodship.
