Unexpected dimensions of a Swifterbant settlement at Medel-De Roeskamp (the Netherlands)

Medel-De Roeskamp sheds new light on the neo-
lithisation of the western part of the North European
Plain, with site permanency in SW2 being arguably
the final outcome of the neolithisation process. Medel-
De Roeskamp is a clear example of a settlement fully
adapted to a sedentary Neolithic way of life in the
western parts of the North European Plain, where fish-
ing, hunting and gathering continued to play a role in
daily life well into the Bronze Age. In the Dutch river
area, the neolithisation process had thus reached a
mature stage already in the period 4,300-4,000 calBC.
Acknowledgements
We are much obliged to the Industrieschap Medel for
financing the archaeological investigations at Medel-
De Roeskamp and in particular to Use Schuuring
(Municipality of Tiel) who with great tenacity put
the archaeology of Medel on the map. We thank the
organisation board of the workshop ‘Stone Age bor-
derland experience - Neolithic and Mesolithic parallel
societies in the North European Plain’ (20 to 22 May
2019, Landesmuseum Hannover) for the opportunity
to attend and to present our paper. Many thanks to
Erik Drenth for his critical remarks on the text.
