During his lifetime Bonington’s fame was already established in a rapidly widening
circle of friends and collectors, but his death in 1828 at the early age of 26 took the
artistic world by surprise, and press biographers at a loss for authentic details of his
life eagerly availed themselves of anecdotes collected from people who, on grounds
however slender, were able to claim acquaintance with him. It may be claimed
that the present book is the first serious attempt to sift the evidence regarding
Bonington’s life and work and to arrive at true conclusions. That M. Dubuisson
possesses the qualifications for such a task is amply proved by his acute and
discerning analysis of the artist’s varied output, which represents the results of long
and sympathetic study, as well as of access to documents which have not been
available to any previous biographer. The numerous illustrations, of which 16 are
in colour, show Bonington’s work in all its many phases, including his academic
studies and the wonderful but little known pencil drawings. The book was written
in French and the translation is by Mr. C. E. Hughes, who has edited the text and
added critical and historical notes to nearly every chapter. He has also contributed
a new list of prints by and after Bonington, and a valuable appendix consists of a
detailed list of Bonington’s work in sales.
