When we were back in our room, Babuschka began to
grin.

‘Why are you laughing?’ I asked.

‘Nothing.’ She went on grinning.

I sat down to the writing-table and began a letter to
Hans. We had squandered another whole day on trivialities.
The smile was still on her lips.

‘What are you laughing at?’

She went to the door, which was still open, and shut it.
Then she laid her finger to her lips, and pointed to the wall
of the Syrian priest’s room. I can’t endure such cryptic
signs.

‘Don’t do it!’ she said.

‘What do you mean?’

She nodded towards the wall, and whispered: ‘Ibrahim!’

Women are dreadful. The worst of it was, though, that
the same thought had struck my mind a long time ago.
