This man would have continued to live in the house of Mengs,
if, blinded by the savour of his patron, the whim had not come
into his head to aspire to the hand of his daughter. Hardly was
this ridiculous pretension of his discovered, than he was turned out
with the approbation os the whole family, and especially with that
of the wife of Mengs, who was not pleased with the ill-bred man-
ners of this fellow.
This man, nevertheless, has always preserred so great a gratitude
for Mengs, that, as soon as he was dead, he disembogued his life,
in which Mengs would not have known himself had he tod the op-
portunity of reading it. He has always called himself his friend
and disciple; and lastly, he has reprinted Mengs's Life of Correg-
gio, giving it as his own proper work. This is the conduct of
Carlo Giuseppe Ratti!
To know better the character os this man, behold one os his
letters written to Mengs, and chosen among many, because here he
ipeaks of the above praised Sketch of the precept.—We shall give
it in the original, not being possible or necessary to translate it.
Roma, 27 Febbraro 1773.
" °ggi dopo pranzo, dopo aver portata una lettera e raccoman-
" datala caldamente alla posta di Napoli, non potendo io quietare
" per non aver V. S. ricevuti li noti bozzetti, sono andato dal
" Signor Agente, il quale sta male per esfer egli stato assalito da
" una siera colica, che dette molto da temere; e da lui ho saputo
" che subito consegnd al Corriere per mezzo del Mastro di posta
" 1'involto; onde son andato ad esso Mastro di posta, e mi ha detto
" averlo egli Resso premurosamente consegnato; che percid ne
" faccino ricerca in Segreteria di Stato e dal Signor Tanucci,
" perche non si puol essere smarrito in verun modo. Dio mio! Se
" io supponeva questo, mi abbozzava il mio Quadro da quel boz-
" zetto a chiaroseuro, quello come io scrissi allcsra, che avea il S.
" Giuseppe di schiena in avanti, ed il pastore colla pecora, perche
" quanto piu me lo ricordo, mi par cosa divina.
" A' Liberti seguita la folita burletta con Musica d'Anfossi,
'' perche Roma tuttodi vi accorre come se fosse la prima sera: ed
" e cola particolare a vedere la forza della Musica con quattro 0
" sei scannati musicacci che cantano, e non vagliono un bajocco, e
" pure compariscono valentuoraini. A Valle li secondi intermezzi
" mi dicono che hanno in contrato terribilmente, e sond Musica
" d'un Marcellino da Capua, che ha composto per la seconda
" commedia che dovea andare in seena ai Liberti, ma che met-
" teranno fuori al pib tardi perche sono troppo al sicuro della
