The * Steeple of the Cathedral is the highest * Erkwin
Pyramid in Europe, and the Church is at present
in the possession of the Roman Catholics. The chiteii cs
Bishop laid Mass there and harangu’d the King, samous Tomer.
a few days after the Conquest os the City. Its Heighth a-
J mounts to Five
hundred seventy and sour Feet. It was siniflid in the Tear 1449- Mirabile
opus caput inter nubila condit. TEn. Sylv. The Bassb-relievo’s on the tops
os the great Pillars os the Church are not fo vijible, hut they are surpri-
zing i sor sbis being a Fabrick os Three or Four hundred Tears old, it is very
sirange to fee such Representations as are there. There is a Procession repre-
sented, in which a Hog carrieth the Pot with the Holy Water, and Ajses and
Hogs in Prieflly Vesiments sollow to make up the ProceJJion ; there is also an Ass
standing besore an Altar, as is he were going to conje'crate, and one carrieth a
Case, with Relicks, in which one seeth a Fox-, and the Trains of all that go in
this Procession are carried up by Monkeys. Dr. Burnet, srom Mr. Ablancourt.
I can aisure you (as one that has seen ’em both)
that the great Clock of Strasburg does much exceed
that of St. Johns at Lyons, both in the variety
and curiosity of its motions. They say at Stras-
burg, that the last-nam’d Clock is the belt in France,
but that theirs cannot be parallelled in the whole
World. There is a printed Description of it,
with a very exadt Figure.
The little River III runs thro’ this City, and
afterwards is branch’d out into several Channels.
The Rhine is about a mile distant, towards the
right hand.
The Arsenal, which not long ago was cele-
brated over all Europe, is now almost quite dis-
furnish’d.
The Womens Habits are very odd and fantasti-
cal.
I must tell you, before I conclude my Letter,
that all the Towns and Villages we have hither-
to seen in Alsatia are either wholly - ruin’d, or
half burnt, this lovely and unfortunate Country
having been several times laid waste during the
Wars. I am, SIR,
Strasburg, July 22, 1688. Tour, &c.
