2. A couple of months ago a terracotta bust was offered to
the Victoria and Albert Museum with an ascription to Leonardo
da Vinci and the suggestion that it corresponded with a work
described. by Lomazzo. No price was mentioned but it would
certainly have been high. The bust has since been. sent to
Archiv Nr. 1319 zu Mitt. 687,1
Messrs. Sotheby’s, the Auctioneers in Bond Street, and will probably
be sold there this Autumn.
It is not without some artistic merit, but a careful examination
of it reveals many suspicious points. The treatment of the mouth
seems inconsistent with a XVth century date and is careless in
