invited me to examine them in Florence in September. "The figures
are life size, carved in old wood, which in the case of the figure
of S. John the Evangelist is very much worm eaten. In places
the sections of the worm holes strongly suggest that the carving
was done after the worm had been at work. The general

appearance of the surface is, however, very good, and there are
traces of colour and gesso visible here and there. Where the
surface of the wood is not immediately visible (e. g. in the interior
of the hands) it has been left quite rough and fibrous.
If the style of the figures were convincing, it would be
difficult to condemn them altogether on this and similar grounds,
