be seen in the treatment of the hair of the Baptist. The symmetrical
curls of the beard recall Romanesque rather than Renaissance
work and do not correspond with the locks of hair on the head.

The mouth of the Evangelist is treated in a way for which I know
no parallel in Renaissance sculpture, and neither fizure, if seen
in profile, stands firmly on its feet. I cannot help thinking that
these figures are forgeries but forgeries of a rather exceptionally
skilful kind, quite probably the work of an artist with whom we
