The ultra-violet light is not always valuable in observing
the condition of a picture. If there is a heavy coat of varnish
or oil it causes a fluorescence which makes it difficult to see
the picture. In this case no such coat of varnish obscured the
picture.

Mlustration 3 shows the picture photographed by inifra red
light. The repainted spots now appear white instead of black.
It is well known that the infra red light has the power of pene-
trating through mist. Photographs of misty landscapes have
been taken where the infra red ray penetrates trough the mist
and reveals the land behind.
