By the word Hernia is generally understood,
in the language of surgery, an external tumour,
formed by a protruiion of the bowels through
one or other of the openings through the abdo-
minal muscles, where the umbilical, spermatic,
or crural * veilels pass out, or round ligament
of the female uterus.
The sac of the tumour is formed by the peri-
toneum, and, within it, are contained an aque-
ous sluid, the omentum, a portion of the alimen-
tary canal, or other viscera os the abdomen.
Difserent names have been applied to the
various species os hernia, descriptive os the age
os the subjecT: asflicted by the disease, or os the
situation os the tumour; hence the term her-
