the consequence of acute hernia, than of that
which comes on in a slow and insensible man-
ner, the protrurlon not being accompanied with
slriclure, or with pain ; and, where the bowels
have remained a long time down, without pro-
ducing any alarming symptom.
In a few hours after strangulation, in many
instances, an efTusion of coagulable lymph may
be observed on the surface of the interline. The
thickness of this varies in disferent instances *.
There is probably a similar efTusion between
the coats of the protruded intestine, as the efsu-
iion on the surface cannot suffigiently account
sor the remarkable increaie of the iize.
