lying on the under matting, were the objects listed above, i.e., between the two mattings. Both
mattings were of the same type, the under laid crosswise but the upper lengthwise. Each con-
sisted of at least three parallel layers, each of single fibers pierced by a single cross fiber of thread,
and the three layers bound together into one thick mass by these cross threads, which were
doubled through into the next layer every 3.5 cm. or every 13 fibers.

1. BkT. cup. H. 13.0, D. 14.5 cm. Figure 4 b. Slightly flaring lip bevelled off on outer edge.
Contained a small piece of charcoal. UCLMA 6-2930.
Head and arms plundered, the head remaining to W. of original position. Sex undetermined —
pelvis broken and indecisive. Matting well preserved in S. end of grave: upper matting laid
lengthwise over burial, under matting laid crosswise. Under matting consisted of a single layer
of single fibers or thread of two strands twisted together. Upper matting of Type I. UCLMA
12-4905.
