The general average was only fair; Galloway's
performance was decidedly good, but it did not come up to
Corlett's of last year.
The high jump was decidedly weak. The Challenge
Cup was gained by Philip with 58 marks, Smith was second
with 18.
Jamieson won the Junior Cup with 34 marks, Spencer
was second with 8. Afterwards Mrs. Lionel Armitage
very kindly distributed the prizes.
CRICKET.
Review of the Season.
The cricket season was altogether a successful one,
the weather was splendid although rather hot, and the
pitches were very fair considering the state of the ground,
thanks to our captain.
And also considering that we started with only two of
last year's eleven, and with only a few practices owing to
the droughty spring, we turned out a very fair eleven at
the end. Davis's team came upon us before Hawthorn
had had a chance of getting his team together, and the
result was that we were hopelessly beaten. We won
both our matches against Heidelberg College and one
against Frankfurt.
What we want in the eleven are some steady bats,
not given to slogging at straight balls. The bowling on
the whole was good, having several changes.
The fielding was not good, too many catches were
missed, and the Heidelberg Town match was distinctively
lost through this, the picking up was not clean, and the
throwing in not well judged. With five old colours left,
and several promising men coming on, we have a good
look out for next year.
The Editor regrets that no reports were taken of any
of the cricket matches.
