DEE NEÜENHEIMER.
35
It was at Königsberg that he met with one of his former
schoolfriends, who proved a real and sincere adviser. They
agreed to pay a visit to the dean of the philosophical faculty.
Herder was received in a doubtful manner, for his exterior
was no recommendation. But even this did not frighten him,
and now followed the last and critical moment, that was a
measure for his whole life. After having passed a satisfactory
exam, with the dean of this faculty, he studied theology.
Although Herder's position was not a very secure one, he
made his way by his energy. Gradually his position
improved by attaining a place as a master at the " Collegium
Priedericiaume" at Kcanigsberg, a position that alleviated
his sorrows and troubles.
This College was mostly visited by Russians and deserves
to be mentioned, since we find later on in the collection of the
"Volkslieder" that his position exercised a great influence
over him. After having finished his theological studies,
Herder became school-master at Riga, made subsequently a
short stay in France as a travelling companion of the Duke of
Holstein Eutin and made the acquaintance of Goethe at
Strassburg. In 1770 he got a place as a "Hofprediger"
with the Count of Biirkebury, came at length to Weimar as a
" Oberconsistorialrat" and was made a Knight in 1801.
