DARING ROBBERY AT NEUENHEIM.

Exciting Midnight Pursuit.

ONE night during the summer holidays a great sensation was caused
at Neuenheim College by the theft of Mr. Hill's donkey by '• Some
person or persons unkown."

The night was calm and dark. Everyone was asleep or apparently
so. Suddenly the silence was broken and there rang out through the
still night air shrill cries of "Murder!" "Police!" "Eire!" and
kindred horrors.

Soon all was bustle and confusion. Affrighted maid-servants,
roused from their slumbers, rushed hither and thither. "What could it
be ? Soon the dread rumour spread. The donkey had been stolen and
the thieves, for rumour said they were numerous and mighty, were now
making off with their unwilling capture across the footer field.

Would no one give chase and thwart the ruffians ? Were there no
men in the house ? They weie not left long in doubt however. Three
sturdy volunteers stepped forth, clad in pyjamas and armed to the teeth
with hockey sticks and wood choppers. Determined and fierce they
looked; no "ignobilis pavor" blenched their brows. As one gazed
upon their calm and yet stern countenances one's thoughts involuntarily
turned to Macaulay's " Dauntless Three " as they stood forth before the
citizens of Rome to meet that mighty Etruscan host.

This gallant " Three " whose deeds we chronicle was composed of
a member of the staff and two of Iiis pupils. We shall call them X, Y
and Z, for with true heroic horror of publicity they have begged me not to
publish their names.

Led by the doughty X, tLe trio started in hot pursuit. For hours
they scoured the football field, ever and anon hurling forth challenges to
the midnight air and bravely daring the mysterious villain to '• come out."
However this rude and doubly villainous villain, if he was there, declined
to accept their pressing invitation.

As they were about to give up the chase and were vigorously
engaged in cursing their luck, they suddenly espied a light glimmering
mysteriously at the other end of the field. " Oh, my hat! " screamed Y,
" there he is," ami the gallant three forthwith rushed towards the spot
brandishing their weapons. But. alas ! they were doomed to disappoint-
ment. When they got there they discovered a human being with a dark
