FOOTBALL ON THE CONTINENT.

The first introduction of the athletic youth of the Continent to foot-
ball, gave rise to some amusing scenes. At Lausanne it was kept alive
by the English colony, the Swiss and the residents of other nationalities
joined in heartily, and before the AVinter of 1880 was over a great three
days' match had been played, in which English public schoolboys were
pitted against the rest of the world. Great was the interest of the public,
still greater its ignorance of the rules of the game. On one occasion an
English boy was making a fine dribble along the touch line, had passed
all the opposing backs, and was within 12 yards of the goal line
when he came upon a nursemaid with a child in her arms, who was standing
on the field of play. Unfortunately the dribbler did not see the obstruction
till it was too late ; the nursemaid was knocked over, the ball rebounded
into touch, the players were annoyed, and the public became indignant.
English technicalities proved racher pu/.zling to the Swiss mind.

A Swiss half-back was being overtaken after a good run, when his
own side shouted out, " Take your drop ! drop it !" the " passing" game
being then practically unknown. These exhortations mystified the half-
back, who gasped out:—"Mais dis done! faut pas le laisser tomber! "
Again in the great three days' match the Swiss had to be repeatedly
reminded by the umpire that they must not collar an opponent who had
not got the ball.

OLD BOYS' COLUMN.

Please remember that the next Old Neuenheimers' Dinner will be
held at the Trocadero Restaurant, Shaftesbury Avenue, London, on Satur-
day Jan. 6th, 1906. Everyone should note this date, for we must
beat this year's attendance,
