on the obverse, the name is inscribed of al-Muzaffar Abu l-Wafa’ Tüzün,
reffering to the then amir al-umarä’. This post originally designated the
caliphate’s military commander-in-chief. The first to hold it was the eu-
nuch Mfmis al-Hpdim, who was appointed by caliph al-Muqtadir billäh in
317 AH = 929/30 AD. Under the caliph’s powerless rule, rival administra-
tive officials in the persons of succesive wazlrs and amirs al-umarä’ sought
to take over all real power in the caliphate, which the last-name were even-
tually successful in doing. One of them was Tuzfin, a Turkish mercenary
who had spent years in service to various masters in Iran and eventually
ended up in the caliphate capital.26 Having made a name for himself as a
military commander in struggles against opponents of central authority,
in the month of ramadan 331 AH = June 943 AD, he was appointed next
amir al-umarä’ by caliph al-Muttaql lillähV The ruler who attempted to
