RINGS WITH PANTICAPAEUM STATERS
FROM THE GREAT RYZ HAN O VKA BARROW

The Great Ryzhanovka Barrow from the village of Ryzhanovka (now
Rizhanivka, Zvenigorodka district, Cherkassy region, about 150 kilometres
to the south of Kiev) had already become known by the end of the nine-
teenth century, thanks to the discoveries made by the Polish researchers
Julian Talko-Hryncewicz and Godfryd Ossowski. In 1887, following the ac-
cidental discovery of an underground tomb in the side (NW) part of the
massive barrow (at that time 7.56 metres in height, and around 30 metres
in width), G. Ossowski1 excavated the catacomb grave, which had been
plundered by the local peasants. The grave had a short corridor (dromos)
and an underground burial chamber, concealing the lavishly appointed
