The Work of Georg Wende Dating from 1699 about Roman Coins
Minted on the Occasion of the Victory upon the Sarmathians
The works of Georg Wende - Vendius (163 5-1705) a secondary school profes-
sor in Wrocław and Toruń, in the domain of numismatics had a pioneer significance
for the Polish writings of the time. This erudite analysis of four Roman coins (two
authentic and two false), associated with the Roman victories upon the Sarmathians
has given the premises leading to the elimination the thesis which associated this
people to the Poles. Vendius was very critical about the conception of the Christian
message in some emission of late antiquity. He also commented upon Mediaeval
numismatics.
