BEWARE, THE TRAUD! ON ALLEGED FINDS
OF DENIERS W I I I I THE LEGEND GNEZDVN
CMTAS AND OTHER COINS FROM THE REIGN
OF BOLESŁAW THE BRAVE
Finds of coins struck in the days of Bolesław the Brave (992-1025) are
sufficiently rare that any report of a new discovery electrifies all those
interested in the history of Polish coinage. The sensation is all the greater
if the report concerns the coin type bearing the legend GNEZDYN CIVI-
TAS, heretofore known - for all practical purposes - from a single speci-
men. This coin, as is generally known, once enhanced the collection of
Count Emeryk Hutten-Czapski, along with which it made its way to the
holdings of the National Museum in Cracow.1
Some readers may recall that the literaturę to date has mentioned
1 S. Suchodolski, „Monetapolska wX/XIwieku", WN XI.2-3 (1967), pp. 112-114, 175-176;
most recently, A. Schmidt, „Nowa interpretacja denara GNEZDYN CIWTAS", in Gniezno. Studia
i materiały historyczne, Vol. III (Warsaw-Poznań 1990), pp. 237-245. It would be difficult,
however, to consider the matter resohed.
