“PECUNIA NON ÖLET?” An Analysis
of the Remnants of 16th-Century Silver Coins
from a Cesspit on the Property
at 28 Floriańska St. /18 Saint Mark St.
in Krakow
ABSTRACT: While carrying out excavations as part of a construction project
on the property at 28 Floriańska St. /18 Saint Mark St. in Krakow, a conglomerate
of severely corroded coins was found inside one of the cesspits. A preliminary
Conservation assessment showed that besides the solidified corrosion products on
the exterior of the coins, the coins themselves do not have a metallic core.
In order to obtain detailed information on the findings, it was decided that
invasive (destructive) methods of maintenance would be used. These methods
consisted, first of all, in the solidification and protection of the conglomerate of coins
with their corrosion products and the mineral material from the original surroundings
of the coins. Then the conglomerate was delaminated in order to obtain the imprints
of the coins that were not preserved. These efforts resulted in the complete or partial
impression of at least one side of each of the coins in the conglomerate. Whether
the impression was elear depended on the type and structure of the mineral material
out of which the body of the “coin prints” was formed.
Atthis point, the fixed numismatic negatives were analysed. This paper concludes
that the collection consists of at least six types of coins from the first half of the 16*
Century, with the majority of these coins being the product of Prussian mintage
(both that of Royal Prussia and Ducal Prussia), i.e. mainly the Schillings issued by
