founded, engendering modern ideas on physical training as propa-
gated by Dr Henryk Jordan. A broad-based restoration project
was begun, and was generally carried out in a competent way. In
the Wawel Castle, deserted by the Austrian troops, an immense
restoration project was carried out, connected with archaeological
and architectural research. A model conservation project was the
restoration of St Mary’s, which removed the Baroque ornamenta-
tion but preserved the valuable eighteenth-century altars. In some
cases, new features were introduced, enhancing, rather than
diminishing the value of the historical buildings. The best exam-
ples are Jan Matejko’s murals in St Mary’s and Stanislaw Wyspiari-
ski’s stained-glass windows in the Franciscan Church. Very unfor-
tunate was the demolition of the medieval Holy Ghost Church and
