are the Royal Castle and the Cathedral. The ruler’s residence, the
upper castle, has always occupied the eastern part of the hill. The
oldest relics of a stone residence date from the turn of the eleventh '

century. New residential and auxiliary buildings progressively
appeared and fortifications were systematically extended, finally to
enclose the whole hill. At the turn of the twelfth century,
a Romanesque castle consisting of a residential building and
a massive tower were raised at the northeastern corner of the hill.

West of the castle about a hundred years later, a building with an
imposing interior, known as the hall of twenty-four pillars,
was erected. Radical changes came in the fourteenth century.
