A good idea to wind up one’s exploration of the old centre of
Cracow is to take a walk around the three-kilometre perimetre of
the Planty park. The park, previously called the Plantations,
covers an area of around 210,000 square metres. Its planting
(hence the name) in place of the demolished fortifications was
begun in 1822 under the guidance of Feliks Radwanski and later
Florian Straszewski. Losing valuable monuments of its medieval
past, Cracow was at the same time gaining a much-needed belt of
greenery, which still plays a significant role in the life of the city.
After the completion of the park, chiefly at the turn of the century,
trees, pathways and flower beds were supplemented with statues
of great historical figures (Fledwig and Ladislaus Jagiello), writers
and artists (Michal Balucki, Bohdan Zaleski, Artur Grottger, and,
in recent times, Tadeusz Zelenski-Boy). A simple obelisk with
a medallion is dedicated to the chief creator of the Planty, Florian
Straszewski. During the last half century lack of care and in-
dustrial pollution severely damaged the historical park. Only
recently restoration work was undertaken and some sections of
the Planty have already regained their original elegance and
beauty. Walking around the Planty, one also has the opportunity
of looking at the already explored buildings from a different
perspective.
