The western part of Kazimierz across Krakowska Street, pre-
sents a completely different picture. The extensive area between
Paulinska, Augustiariska and Skaleczna Streets is occupied by the
magnificent complex of the former Augustinian monastery, with
the Church of St Catherine. Paulinska Street marks the original
northernmost limit of Kazimierz, and the wall now enclosing the
Augustinian gardens is a relic of the town fortifications.
The Augustinian order was located in the new town by
Casimir the Great. Construction of the church was begun, as
usual, from the choir. It was raised from 1345 to 1378, and slightly
later, at the turn of the fifteenth century, the nave corpus was
