Fab. III. & IV. 7he Rape of Dejanira, and
Death of Hercules.
'THE ARGUMENT.
Hercules, perceiving Neflus' Defign, shoots him with an Arrow,
which prevented the Execution of it. The Centaur , juft expiring,
in order to revenge himfelf, gives Dejanira his Coat, dipt in his own
Blood; alluring her it contained a Charm againft all Infidelity of her
Husband. She, hearing that Hercules was in Love with Iole, fent
him the Coat, that it might have the pretended Effect. Affoon as
he put it on, he was filled with racking Pains; and feized with fuch
violent Fits of Madnefs, that he threw Lychas, who brought the Coat,
into the Sea, where he was changed into a Rock. Hercules, in Obe-
dience to a Refponfe of the Oracle he had confulted, afterwards pre-
pares a Funeral Pile, & refolutely lays himfelf on it: His Friend Phi-
lo&etes lights it; and the Hero, after a Recital of his Labours, expires
in the Flames. When his Body was confumed, Jupiter tranflated him
to the Heavens; 6c placed him among the Gods.
