PHOSES. Book IX. 299

„ Yet ftill Euryjlheus breathes the vital Air.
„ What Mortal now ftiall feek the Gods with
Pray'r ?

The Hero Cud >, and with the Torture ftung ,
Furious o'er OEte's lofty Hills he fprung.
Stuck with the.Shaft, thusfcourstheTygerrounds
And leeks the flying Author of his Wound.
Now might you fee him trembling, now he vents
His anguifli'd Soul in Groans , and loud Laments}
He drives to tear the clinging Veil in vain,
And with up-rooted Forefts ftrows the Plain;
Now kindling into Rage, his Hands he rears,
And to his kindred Gods directs his Pray'rs.
WhenLychas, lo, he {pies-, who trembling flew,
And in a hollow Rock concetil'd from View,
Had fhun'd his Wrath. Now Grief renew'd his Pain,
His Madnels chaf d, and thus he raves again.
,, Lychas, to thee alone my Fate I ow,
„ Who bore the Gift, the Caufe of all my Wo".
The Youth all pale, with fluv ring Fear was ftung,
And vain Excufcs falter'd on his Tongue.
Alcides fhatch'd him, as with fuppliant Face
He ftrove to clalp his Knees, and beg for Grace:
He tofs'd him o'er his Head with airy Courfe,
And hurl'd with more than with an Engine's
Force ?

Far o'er th' Euhoean Main aloof he flies,
And hardens by Degrees amid the Skies.
So fliowry Drops, when chilly Tempefts blow*
Thicken at firft, then whiten into Snow,
In Balls congeal'd the rolling Fleeces bound
In folid Hail refult upon the Ground.
Thus, whirl'd with nefvous Force thro' diftant
Air,

The Purple Tide forfbok his Veins, with Fear;
All Moifture left his Limbs. Transfbrni'd to
Stone,

In ancient Days the craggy Flint was known 5
Still in th' Euhoean Waves his Front he rears, )
Still the fmall Rock in human Form appears, y
And ftill the Name of haplefs Lychas bears. \

But now the Hero of immortal Birth
Fells OEtes Forefts on the groaning Earth;
A Pile he builds; to VhiloBetes Care
He leaves his deathful Inftruments of War;
To him commits thofe Arrows, which again
Shall fee the Bulwarks of the Trojan Reign.
The Son of Paan lights the lofty Pyre,
High round the Structure climbs the greedy Fire;
Plac'd on the Top, thy nervous Shoulders rpread
With the Hcm*an Spoils, thy carelefi Head
