Os the P1 a z z e os the Romam.
THE Romans, and the Italians sas Vitruvius says in the above-mentioned place)
departing srom the custoni os the Greeks, made their piazze longer than they were
broad ; lb that the length being divided into three parts, two were given to 'he breadth
because os the gratuities in them made to the gladiators. This sorm was much more com-
modious sor that purpose than the square one; and sor this reason also they made the inter-
column iat ions of the portico's, that were round the piazze, os two diameters and a quarter
of a column, or os three diameters, that the sight os the people mi^ht not be obitrucLv. by
the ctoseness os the columns. The portico's were as t~^ad as .he columns were long, and
they had banker's (hops under them. The columns above were made one scu::h part Left
than those below, because the under parts, with respect to the weight they bear, ou^ht
to be sirmer than those above, as was said in the first book. In the part feeing the
hottest region of the heaven they placed the basilica, which I have marked in the design os
these piazze, two squares in length; and in the part within there arc portico's round it, the
third part os the (sace in the middle in breadth. Their columns are as long as the place
is broad, and they may be made of the molt acceptable order.
In the part facing the north, I have placed there the curia, one square and an hals
jn length ; its height is hals the length and breadth put together. This was the place (as I
have said above) where the senate met to consult about matters os (late.
