OLD DONGOLA
SUDAN
paintings typical of church decoration:
a fragmentary college of apostles has been
preserved in the sanctuary, including
a portrait depiction of a bishop of Dongola,
and to the north of the altar screen, severely
damaged remnants of a Nativity scene.12)
The church remained in use presumably
until the fall of Christianity at Dongola.
After a while, the floor was covered with a
thick layer of windblown sand and the
interior used by the later inhabitants of the
citadel as storage and household space.
Fig. 11. Plan of the Cruciform Building after its restoration as a small church (B.1II.2) (north is
at the top) (Drawing W. Godlewski, D. Zielinska)
12) Also discussed by D. Zielinska in her contribution to this volume.
