OLD DONGOLA

SUDAN

paintings typical of church decoration:
a fragmentary college of apostles has been
preserved in the sanctuary, including
a portrait depiction of a bishop of Dongola,
and to the north of the altar screen, severely
damaged remnants of a Nativity scene.12)

The church remained in use presumably
until the fall of Christianity at Dongola.
After a while, the floor was covered with a
thick layer of windblown sand and the
interior used by the later inhabitants of the
citadel as storage and household space.
