cave is his particular cave at Athens ; it stood for any cave,
wherever the god was worshipped. In one instance of this type
(fig. 9)? Pan actually descends and pipes and dances with his
worshippers. It would here again be hard to say whether Hermes

leads the Charites or the Nymphs, but that one slab (fig. io) of
similar type though earlier date is inscribed. The women figures
are standing, not dancing, and Hermes is absent; Pan, too, is not
piping, but looks out from a hole in the rock above. This slab
was found actually within the precincts of the Asklepieion,12 where
there was an altar to Pan, the Nymphs, and other deities, so that
