PREFACE
pis. ii, 7 and 43, 2; and to Miss L. Payne for the drawing reproduced in
pi. 2. And lastly to the staff of the Clarendon Press for their helpfulness and
courtesy, and for the spirit in which they have met the many difficulties
inherent in the publication of a book of this kind.
I should perhaps add that the title of this book is taken from a passage in
Strabo (viii. 6. 381) which describes how the Romans rebuilt Corinth in
44 B.C., and in doing so came upon graves containing antiques which they
called necrocorinthia.
