indented as a rule on early vases. Dot rosettes occur on one or two of the
vases here classified as early Corinthian (e.g. pi. 17,7,12), and, in a weakened
form, even later (e.g. pi. 31,7). Dotted circles are not uncommon (cf. pi. 18,
5 and nos. 687, 768, and the Transitional pi. 12, 1).

Many middle Corinthian vases show the same kind of filling ornaments as
early Corinthian. Towards the end of the middle period, however, we find

one or two degraded forms which do not occur earlier: figs. 68A-b;1 star-
rosettes,2 fig. 69 a; and dot-rosettes of several kinds: figs. 69B-c.3 We also
find buds growing into the field on long stalks.4 These are also common in
the late period.5 Palmettes in the field: no. 808. The only novelty introduced
in the late period is the outlined rosette, which we find on no. 1417. Reserved
rosettes on a black background occur on a few late vases,6 but of course not
as filling ornament. The rosette form shown in fig. 69 d is not found on
Corinthian vases except on a very small scale. Large rosettes of this type, on
the other hand, are very common in Italo-Corinthian vase-painting.
