lustre of varnish, like that of clay, was no doubt produced by polishing. There
is little variation in the red used for details: it is the same purplish colour
which is used by Attic and other artists.

The filling-ornament, when nothing further is specified, consists of dot-
rosettes in Protocorinthian and Transitional vases, of incised rosettes, and of
blobs and dots (these often without incision) in Corinthian.

The following abbreviations are used in the catalogue: int. for interior,
ext. for exterior, r. for rim, h.p. for handle-plate (in column-craters), f.o. for
filling ornament, 1. and p. for lotus and palmette, ans. for animals. 'Floral'
signifies a substantive floral ornament, i.e. not a consecutive chain. In de-
scriptions of vases with several friezes, i signifies the uppermost freize, 2, 3,
&c. the others in succession below.
