Aegina, fragments of a lid.2 A fragment in Athens

is shown on fig. 117 ( cf. A.M. 1897,324 fig.39a and
b). The fragment in Aegina is F 48 (lion's head,
back of goat). These fragments may be earlier than
this period; the groups of three black lines which
bound the frieze are certainly characteristic of the
previous style. I place them here because of the
very complex stylizations of the lion's head. Yellow
as well as red used on the wing-quills (A.M. l.c, b).
Athens, from Aegina. PI. 8, 8 (A.M. 1897, 307 54
fig. 30). Yellow as well as red on the wing-quills (cf.
last). For the rendering of the chiton, cf. the
Thermon Perseus, and no. 40; there is one early
Corinthian parallel (no. 481).

With linear decoration. For earlier types see Johan- B.
sen pis. 12, 18. In the late Protocorinthian period
the large areas covered with fine horizontal bands
generally give way to a decoration of red and black
bands, alternating with rows of double dots; the
same change takes place in the decoration of the
kotyle (cf. no. 199 and ff.)

Examples: Villa Giulia, from Caere (Mengarelli, 55
Studi Etruschi i, pi. 27). On the tomb group, see
p. 27. Brussels, from Veii (C.V.A. pi. 1, 6). The
series continues in no. 665 (cf. on no. 646). Athens,
from Phaleron (Deltion 1926, 34 fig. 25 right; fig.
27 right: fig. 27 left has concave sides and is later).

POWDER PYXIDES

For the shape, see on no. 672. Examples of late
Protocorinthian or Transitional date: Syracuse, 56
from tomb 412 (N.S. 1895, 164). Villa Giulia,
from Caere (Studi Etruschi i, pi. 27).

1 Cf. nos. 115, 116.

2 Found in different places near the temple of Aphrodite, but apparently parts of the same vase.
