type shown in fig. 151, are never found in early
Corinthian contexts. The early Corinthian type
may have lasted into the early sixth century, but it
was certainly soon displaced by the other form.
The intermediate stages are well represented among
the finds at Corinth; cf. also N.S. 1925, 185 fig. 10,
from an early Corinthian tomb (p. 57 supra).

PYXIDES WITH CONCAVE SIDES

Athens, from the Argive Heraeum (lid fragment). 203
(A.H. ii, pi. 59, 34). Part of lion and goat. Delphi 204
(F. de D. v, 151 fig. 624). Lid fragment: sphinx,
boar. Vatican 82 (Albizzati pi. 7). Lid: hounds 205
chasing hare. Vase: lions, panthers, goat, ram, bird.
Late Transitional. Syracuse, from Megara Hyblaea 206
tomb 21 (Mon. Ant. i, 808 and pi. 5,12). On lid and
vase, lions and boars. Early Transitional or late
Protocorinthian. The vase contained a faience
aryballos and was found in a sarcophagus with a
plastic vase in the form of a bull's head (Ionian
fabric).1 The grave contained two burials, and many
other vases. British Museum A 1345, from 207
Camirus (Johansen pi. 42, 6 with a lid (no. 661 infra)
which does not belong). Several patterns above and
below the main frieze; female figure between
griffons, lions, swan between sphinxes, eagles.
Unusual, but evidently early style.
