right). Recumbent sphinx, with bird wing (cf. no.
578 a). The British Museum has recently acquired 326 b
a small alabastron with a recumbent sphinx, fig. 28;
similar wings, but one in front of the body, one
behind, a regular Mycenaean type (Bossert, Alt-
kreta2, pis. 170, 171), which has oriental analogies
(Perrot iii, 129 fig. 73; 774 fig. 547; &c.) These last
doubtless give the clue to the origin of the Corin-
thian examples. Semi-recumbent sphinxes are, of
course, common on Rhodian vases (e.g. C.V.A.
Louvre ii, D c pi. 5, 5.)

pi. 1, 29). Probably middle Corinthian. Delos 329-32

with no. 242 and a local copy of a pointed aryballos.
