These augnft ruins are in the little Circar of Annagoondy^
whieh does not extend above twenty miles around this vaft city.
It is very fingular that that little Circar is now poffefTed by a
lineal defcendant of Ram-Rajab, the laft great monarch of Bee-
jamaggur, and its attendant nations Canarine and Malabar,,
nnited feven hundred years before under the rule of Kifncndeo,
Tippoo wifhed to referve this little tract to himfelf, for the fatis-
faction of generoufly reftoring to the defcendant the frnall
relique of the great empire of his anceftors. He is denied the
title of Rajah) inftead of which he has the diminutive Rayeel
beftowed on him ; this fuitable to his revenues, which do not
exceed two lacks of rupees, or twenty-five thoufand pounds
per annum-y with the empty regality of a mint at Annagoondy.
Sera. About fifty miles to the fouth of Bifnagur is Sera or Scirra,
capital of a confiderable Soubabßip, tili it was reduced by^Ayder
Ali, in conjunction with Bazaletzing king of Adoni. It was
articled that he fhonld have all the moveable plunder, fuch as
cannon, ammunition, &c. &c. and Ayder remain poffeffed of
the place. The city was taken, and the agreement fulfilled, (o
that Ayder remained mailer of an extenfive territory adjacentto
that of Myfore, of which he was proclamed Soubab. Sera ftands
about fixty miles to the north-weft of Bangalore. The Marquis
made the foubahßip of the former the quarters of the Mabrattas,
at the time their fervices were not wanted, in the interval be-
tween his two great campaigns.
